Digicel Nauru Meets the Queen's Baton

July 7th 2010 - Digicel Nauru Meets the Queen's Baton

DIGICEL NAURU MEETS THE QUEEN’S BATON CARRYING THE QUEENS MESSAGE FOR THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES DELHI 2010.

Digicel Nauru was privileged to be one of the proud sponsors of the Queen’s Baton Relay Delhi XIX Commonwealth Games celebration which took place in Nauru on the 5th – 10th May 2010. This will be the second time Nauru is honored to receive the Queen’s Baton and Digicel Nauru was involved in partaking in the celebrations. Nauru was the 55th out of the 71 Commonwealth countries the baton visited, where it spent 5 days travelling all corners of the island.

The Baton was greeted by His Excellency President Marcus Stephen himself, whom was also known as the ‘Golden Boy’ during his days of weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games. It was also the first time ever that a country declared a public holiday for the occasion, allowing each and everyone in the community to participate in welcoming, experiencing and most of all to touch the Queen’s Baton as it was handed over from person to person.

Digicel Nauru not only had witnessed the Queen’s Baton but some of the staff even handled the baton itself. As one of the officials escort puts it, “this baton is very unique in its own way as it has eyes (mini camera) to capture all the places and people it comes across, ears (microphone) to record every word whispered around the baton”. It surely captured every moment, and each community had their own way of greeting the Queen’s Baton from traditional dances to traditional wear and as the theme goes in Nauruan, “Ekamawir Omo Ean Medenam” (Goodluck on your journey).
